Congratulations to Charlie Newman who took his maiden five wicket haul at Woodford Green yesterday.
He took two wickets in his opening spell as he cleaned up left hander Jagdeep Chaggar for a “golden” with his fourth ball of the day and also trapped Sunny Patel lbw to reduce the hosts to 27-3 after Ed Paleit (0) had been run out to the second ball he faced.
George Paleit (58) led the recovery as he featured in partnerships of 73 with opener Husnain Kazmi (50 off 47 balls) and 98 with David Roberts, who struck 78 off 55 balls before he retired.
Newman returned to take three wickets in last seven balls to finish with figures of 5-42 as the home side reached 235-8 from their 35 overs. Ophir Diemaker (1-36) took the other wicket to fall, dismissing Kazmi, who departed to a smart slip catch from skipper Kieran Morgan.
Ted Levey opened the batting with Jawaad Hussain as he began his 60th playing season with the club. Ted contributed 19 to an opening partnership of 81 in 22 overs before Hussain recorded his maiden half century for the club before retiring on 69.
Morgan struck four sixes and two fours he clubbed 41 off 23 deliveries before also retiring while Sam Shemwell, who earlier unveiled his new image as an off spinner, scored 20. While we ended up 60 runs short on 175-4, it was a very encouraging display with all the youngsters performing admirably.
