The U11’s played their first league game of the season at Town Fields against St Margaretsbury.
The visitors won the toss and put Sawbo into bat.
Sawbo made a strong start with Thomas M. retiring on 28 (finishing his innings with three fine 4’s) and Louis S. and Jake B. both playing very well to get the score to 72 - 0 after 11 overs.
The St. Margs attack was beginning to wilt when Louis was caught mistiming a full toss that he was trying to fire into the tennis courts, and Jake let one slip through his defence and we had fallen to 82 - 2 In the 12th over.
Ethan D. and Sammy M. came to the crease and looked to continue the damage with a succession of 4’s, and St Margs brought their fastest bowler in from wicket keeping to try and stem the flow.
Unfortunately he bowled three quick wickets against some perhaps overly aggressive batting, and 96 - 2 from 14 overs rapidly became 108 - 6 after 16 overs.
We managed to steady the ship and get to 126 at the end of the innings.
Ethan opened the bowling for Sawbo and set the tone for the innings by getting a wicket with his second ball. Sammy opened from the other end and repeated the same trick, and when the pair had finished their opening spell the visitors were 14 - 4 from 4 overs.
There was no respite for St Margs as Ewan again took a wicket with the second ball of his first over, and not to be outdone Thomas was only denied a hat trick by some dubious officiating. At this point the shell shocked batting team were 26 - 7 from 6 overs.
Harrison bowled a maiden of left arm leg spin that was turning around corners, and Billy and Isaac put the visitors out of their misery for 29.
Apologies to the lads that didn’t get to bowl, but they only lasted 8.4 overs.
Very well played by everyone, it was a great start to the season.
We did get a little overconfident in the middle of our innings - remember straight bats to straight bowling!
Also thanks a lot to Noah who agreed to help out the oppo, who were short, and played valiantly in a losing cause.
