Stortford won the toss and decided to bat first.
After some criticism from me last week in our win over Hertford about untidy bowling and fielding, the boys responded brilliantly this week and kept it really tight. Stortford are a strong batting side who hit 150 against us last time out, but at 10 overs we had kept them to 40 runs, though with only one wicket down.
With wickets in hand they managed to up the run rate in the second half, but the team kept the pressure on. Particularly notable was a fantastic catch on the boundary from Jake, and a double wicket over from Sammy. They managed to reach a total of 111 for 5 of their 20 overs.
In response we started steadily, with Thomas and Jake building the innings after the early loss of Jack's wicket. It was a body blow in the 5th over when some great work from the Stortford Wicky first lead to a run out for Thomas, and then almost immediately a great catch to a nick from Sammy. We reached 53 of our first ten overs, so well ahead of the Stortford score but we were 4 wickets down.
Jake batted very strongly and would go on to retire, and Louis also picked up 25 runs. The rest of the team supported well and picked up enough runs to keep it a really close game, but we ended up getting bowled out in the 19th Over for 105 runs, just 6 runs short.
It was a great performance, but we just need to prize our wickets a little more and not worry about the run rate. Stortford only had 40 runs at 10 overs but managed to get to 111. We were worrying about the run rate, but were actually 53 at 10 overs, and didn't manage to bat out our full innnings. If we had managed to bat for the full 20 we would likely have won it.
