On a typical cold April evening at Leventhorpe, St Margaretsbury won the toss and sensibly elected to bat first with the prospect of a finish in diminishing light.
Sawbridgeworth started very strongly, nearly taking a wicket first ball when a catch just fell short. Albert Page then took a good caught and bowled in his first over, followed by a run out by Zoe Bovaird next ball. Mo Mirza got into the act shortly thereafter, bowling their no. 4 to leave St Margaretsbury in trouble at 20 for 3. However, a good partnership of 64 followed, at more than a run a ball and set them up for a good score. Matthew Vaughan managed to get their opener out, who batted really well for his 39, caught by Albert Page. Despite some tight bowling at the end, St Margaretsbury reached a challenging total of 118 off their 18 overs.
Sawbridgeworth's reply began brightly, despite the early loss of James Ponting. Albert Page made a very well constructed 36, putting on a partnership of 61 with Mo Mirza. With 7 overs to go, Sawbridgeworth were looking good, with the asking rate at just over a run a ball. However, 3 wickets for 10 runs in 3 overs pushed the required rate up significantly. A couple of big straight 6s from Zoe Bovaird meant there was an outside chance of victory with 2 overs to go, but 18 off the last over proved too much.
Overall, it was a good performance, particularly by the bowlers with every player bowling at least 1 over. It was only some excellent bowling by St Margaretsbury in the middle overs that prevented a win.
